Bloomin' marvelous

This weekend Floriade begins in Canberra. This is Australia's premier flower festival and remains so despite several peurile attempts at imitation over the years.

One of the more outrageous attempts was a flower festival held in Sydney in the early 2000s which was actually called The Western Sydney Floriade. ACT tourism authorities had registered the name in Australia and after legal letters were sent, the bogans never used the name again.

Floriade was only ever intended to be a one-off event for the 1988 Bicentenary, however it proved such a success it was instituted as a permanent annual event.

Spring is a fickle time in Canberra, the weather isn't always the best. The 2009 event was a major disappointment. Although the first weekend was fine and sunny, a few days later an intense cold front moved in with bitterly cold, rainy and windy weather and the rest of it was ruined. Luckily the long range forecast for this year's event predicts mostly sunny weather to display the blooms in the best possible light.

Floriade isn't just about flowers, it has become a whole cultural festival. There are musical performances, culinary stalls and outdoor restaurants, rides for the kids and souvenir tents. There really is something for everybody.

I'll be taking my camera along and hope to get some more pics like this one in 2008. If you haven't already booked get on the phone or Net immediately because accom is usually very tight during the festival. If you are already coming, lay back and enjoy the view :)
